Airdrie city council has approved a new Land Acknowledgement Policy, formalizing when and how land acknowledgements are delivered at council meetings, committees, and city-hosted events.
The policy introduces a single standardized acknowledgement and outlines expectations for respectful delivery, along with a commitment to ongoing consultation at least every two years with the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuut’ina Nation, Îethka (Stoney) Nakoda Nations, and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government District 4.
Council members acknowledged concerns that land acknowledgements can risk becoming routine, but said formalizing the practice provides a starting point rooted in consultation.
