The drumbeat returns to northeast Calgary next month as Closer to Home’s 4th Annual All My Relations Healing Powwow brings community, culture, and connection to the Genesis Centre.

“A Powwow celebration is powerful and can unite people from all Nations to celebrate identity, relationships, and cultural practices. Through songs, drumming, and dancing, Powwows offer a safe space for healing. The power of the drum represents the heartbeat of a person and a community; it helps us connect with ourselves and the natural world around us.” – Closer to Home Website

CJWE had the chance to speak with the organizers, Gillian Manson, Manager, Marketing & Communications with Closer to Home and Family Support Worker Darcy Turning-Robe,  about what this gathering means, what visitors can expect, and why events like this continue to play such an important role in bringing people together:

The gathering will include a full-contest traditional dance component. Dancers across Alberta and beyond are welcome to participate in the event; no registration is required this year.

Running on May 23rd from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., the event invites people of all backgrounds to experience the power of traditional Indigenous song, dance, and shared stories in a space focused on healing and unity.

Grand Entry at 1pm // The Powwow is open to the public; everyone is welcome!
