Canada Sports Hall of Fame held an event in Tsuut’ina Nation today (April 17), which helped to inspire Indigenous youth.

As part of the 2nd Annual Youth Inspiration Day, which was held at the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex on Tsuut’ina Nation, saw 67 Indigenous youth from 18 different Nations across Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan take part in an immersive experience that focused on mentorship, leadership, sport, and community connection.

Shaelyn Brown, the Manager of Education and Programming at Canada Sports Hall of Fame, explains more.

According to Brown, this event stemmed from an event that occurred several years ago.

The Sports Hall of Fame had connected with leaders from Indigenous communities, who then put forward the names of youth that would benefit from an event like this.

Any Indigenous youth that is interested in participating in this event in the future, reach out to Canada Sports Hall of Fame.

ECA MLA Rajan Sawhney was in attendance and gave a brief speech to those in attendance.

Sawhney says events like this are meaningful.

Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller was in attendance.

Horn-Miller is Mohawk from Quebec, and on top of being an Olympic athlete, she was involved in the Oka Crisis in 1990.

During the crisis, she was stabbed with a bayonet by a solider, and the incident was photographed, which can be found online.
