An example modular classroom
A $200 million dollar investment from the provincial government looks to add more modular classrooms as community growth continues upwards. Although nearly two thirds of the modular classrooms have been allocated to Edmonton and Calgary, nearly 70 modular class units are approved for communities outside the main cities. The lump sum comes in part from a $600 million dollar plan to address overcrowding and growing populations around the province.
The investment is estimated to create space for more than 5,450 students throughout Alberta. The CBE also said the modular classrooms are all up to provincial code, usually take 8-12 months to get fully functional, and some even connect directly to existing school buildings. The province expects the changes to be fully in effect before the 2026/2027 school year.
