The City of Lethbridge is looking down a potential $350 million upgrade bill for the cities wastewater treatment plant. In a review presented to a council committee this month, several key components received a “very poor” grade.

With more water coming from industrial sources, and over 35 years since the plant saw upgrades, the pressure to upgrade the aging infrastructure is growing. If things come to a failure point, the city of Lethbridge could face water restrictions. The plant is cycling through nearly 40 million liters of water a day, with an increase in heavy pollutants that take longer to treat.

Some of the components facing the “very poor” grade are the ultra-violet disinfection tank, which works as a way to treat microorganisms in the water and the electrical building.

City administration will have to present a plan to the committee on May 13th for the first phase of upgrades, and ideas on how to pay for it.
