Alberta RCMP have launched an investigation into the potential misuse of the province’s voter list, following concerns raised by an individual connected to the Alberta NDP.
Elections Alberta says it recently obtained a court injunction over what it calls the unauthorized use of a political party’s copy of the List of Electors by Centurion Project Ltd. The agency stressed there has been no breach of its own systems.
Mounties say they are working with other law enforcement partners to determine whether any offences were committed related to how the information was handled or shared.
The voter list contains sensitive personal data, including names, addresses and contact information, and is only allowed to be used by authorized groups under Alberta’s Election Act.
Elections Alberta says it is continuing to work with police and privacy officials to determine the scope of the issue, while warning Albertans to stay alert for suspicious messages or activity involving their personal information.
