Those who are needing to access mental health and addiction support in Alberta will only need to press a few buttons on their phone.

211 Alberta is now the main access point for mental health and addiction services in the province, which provides a consistent starting point for those seeking help.

By simplifying access to support, it makes it easier for people to find the right supports when they need it, and Albertans are able to call, text, or chat online with 211 Alberta to get connected to mental health and addictions supports.

People will also be connected with community and social services, at any time throughout the province, and those feeling overwhelmed or need help immediately can be connected to immediate, confidential support.

Prior to 211 becoming the main access for mental health and addiction support, Albertans had to navigate multiple phone numbers and entry points to receive help, which created confusion, duplication, and challenges, especially for those who are reaching out during difficult times.

For many, mental health and addiction issues are closely tied to housing, income, employment, and family needs, and effective recovery means helping those in need to access all of those supports together.

“Finding mental health and addiction support shouldn’t be confusing or be difficult to navigate. With 211 Alberta as the provincewide number to call, people have a clear place to start. We want to make sure help is easy to find when it matters most,” Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, Rick Wilson, stated in a release.

Through 211 Alberta, people are able to connect with a variety of support, such as clinical services offered by Recovery Alberta, support and guidance from qualified mental health and addiction professionals, peer support services for those who need non-clinical emotional support, immediate crisis support, and affordable professional counselling through Counselling Alberta.

211 Alberta can also connect people to other community and social resources, such as housing, employment, financial, and food/basic needs, and specialized support for children and youth, families, and Indigenous communities.

This service is provided in partnership by United Way Alberta of the Capital Region, Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton Region, and Distress Centre Calgary.

Even though 211 Alberta is the main access point for these services, there is no wrong way to get help, as existing mental health and addiction phone lines remain operational, and accessing these supports can be done through familiar pathways.

211 Alberta is available 24/7 in over 240 languages, and the service is free and confidential.

Through Budget 2026, $4.9 million will be provided to 211 Alberta to support the increased calls, texts, and live chats.
