There is plenty to do in Southern Alberta this weekend, including enjoying the warm weather

Not only will it be warm this weekend, there is plenty of activities for people to do in Southern Alberta.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening this weekend:

 

Friday, May 8:

At the Museum of the Highwood in High River, their exhibit, Inspired To Create: Art of the Highwood is on display, which showcases artwork inspired by the Highwood area.

The Okotoks Art Gallery has a pair of exhibits for people to check out.

One of the exhibits is Earthly Delights, by Neil McClelland, which reflects upon the human delight in gardens.

The other exhibit is Ruin & Reclamation: Re-iterated by Beany Dootjes, which repurposes men’s business attire and other textiles into oversized insects.

These exhibits will be on display until June 26.

From 9 a.m. to noon at the Culver Room at the Lethbridge City Hall, there will be a Emergency Social Services Information Session. People interested in volunteering with Emergency Social Services are invited to learn about the role of the Emergency Social Services during emergencies, and more.

As part of this week’s Nature Fridays, people will learn about compost. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Environmental Education Centre in Okotoks,  people learn about compost and how it is made.

To help celebrate Mother’s Day, people can attend a Mother’s Day Metal Stamping event at the Okotoks Public Library. As part of this event, people make personalized bracelet for their mother’s. This runs from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

At the Okotoks Alliance Church, the Foothills Philharmonic Chorus presents “We Can Mend the Sky”, which is a concert exploring themes of societal change, conflict, and injustice, and more. The concert begins at 7 p.m. This will also be happening from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

At the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, the Medicine Hat School of Performing Arts presents Spring Fever 2026. At this event, there will be laughter and tears as students bring their talent to the stage. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, but there will also be shows on Saturday and Sunday that people can enjoy.

At St. Augustine’s Church in Lethbridge, people are invited to attend Melodies for Mother’s Day: A Centric MusicFest Fundraiser, which will be an evening of live music in support of Centric MusicFest. Performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

 

Saturday, May 9:

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Highland Dance Competition will be taking place. This brings the Scottish heritage to life through dancers donning traditional costumes performing traditional dances,

From 9 a.m. to noon, there is a Community Clean Up and Tree Planting event happening in Okotoks. As part of this event, people will be able to help giver the river valley in Okotoks a good spring cleaning. People will be able to help plant seedlings, as they aim to plant 1,500 seedlings.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Servus Sports Centre in Lethbridge, SportFest 2026 will be taking place. At this, there will be 4 ‘Give-it-a-Try’ zones, a bike rodeo, and more.

The High River Fire and Protective Services team will be hosting their annual Fire Hall Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the High River Fire Hall. As part of this, people will meet emergency responders, learn about 72-hour emergency kits and wildfire safety, visit displays, and more.

It’s Ladies’ Day Out at the Okotoks Art Gallery Studio, where ladies will be able to take in a Papercutting Workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

From noon to 3 p.m. at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre Art Gallery in Medicine Hat, there is a Living Threads: Wearable Art Inspired by the Land workshop. As part of this workshop, people will learn about textiles, and more.

Also in Medicine Hat, there is an Open House at the historic Ewart-Duggan Residence, which is a preserved 19th-centure home in the heart of Medicine Hat. As part of the open house, people will experience the past through interactive activities, and more. This will happen from 1 to 4 p.m.

At the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, there is a public reception for three solo artist exhibitions, starting at 7 p.m.

 

Sunday, May 10:

At the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, Canada’s Ukrainian Nutcracker, Shumka: Back to Our Roots will be performed. This performance will highlight the remarkable diversity of Ukrainian regions and styles. Performance starts at 7:30 p.m.

In Lethbridge, St. Francis Performing Arts presents “Cinderella” the Musical from 2 to 4 p.m. There are multiple performances throughout the day.
