The skies may be buzzing in the near future, as the Red Deer RCMP are rolling out a Drone First Responder (DFR) program, an expansion of the already existing RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
RPAS has been in use since 202, being used for things like search and rescue, missing persons or even a major crime investigation.
With the final details almost done, and a launch date imminent, the drones plan to be launched from two locations; the North and South Red Deer RCMP detachments, and will be piloted by trained members that received specialized training in weeks to come.
“RCMP would like to reassure the public that the use of RPAS and DFR will be carried out in accordance with applicable laws and legislation, which includes strict privacy and legal guidelines,” the news release said.
The news release also went on to assure the public that the drones would NOT be used for any type of surveillance or personal footage collection.
The drones will be primarily supporting RCMP, fire crews and municipal by-law enforcement, as well as EMS calls.
