Calgary’s Indigenous Gathering Place Society is launching an event to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day this year with a full day celebration, and will take place Sunday June 21st, from 11am tro 9:30pm at the ContainR Art Park and the Alexandria Centre in Inglewood.
The event is meant to represent more than a day of programming; it’s a step towards realizing a long-awaited, permanent Indigenous-led gathering place in the City of Calgary. For now, the locations for the event will be transformed for a day in a living expression of the diversity and presence of Indigenous peoples across the city and country.
The day will open and close with ceremony led by Elders, and throughout the afternoon visitors will experience drumming, dance, and a demonstration powwow. Live Indigenous music and performances will carry into the evening, culminating in a contemporary music showcase running from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. An artisan market at The Alexandra Centre will highlight Indigenous makers and creators, while storytelling, teachings, and family-friendly activities round out the schedule.
We spoke with Board Member Daisy Giroux about the event and some extra details.
Daisy tells us about how the event came to be and it’s purpose.
We also asked about the part Daisy is most excited about.
The event is designed to welcome both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members, encouraging learning, relationship-building, and a shared celebration of culture. Organizers emphasize that the gathering is an invitation to come together in a spirit of respect and connection—reflecting the broader vision of a future permanent Indigenous Gathering Place in the city.
