A family on Siksika Nation is struggling, after their daughter was beaten and had a portion of her lower lip bit off during an assault last Thursday.

The 16-year-old had her lip stitched up, and is now awaiting an appointment with a plastic surgeon to determine if surgery is required for the injury, although doctors say recovery could take a year or more.

Gleichen RCMP investigated, and two young people were charged, who’s names are not available. A 15-year-old male was charged with assault, and a 16-year-old female was charged with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.

Both teens have been released from custody with multiple stipulations, including no-contact with the victim. In a statement, the Siksika Board of Education (SBE) says it is working with RCMP and will be increasing the level of supports at the school for the remainder of the year.

The school board is hosting two “community listening sessions” for parents and staff. The two teens are due back in court Wednesday.
