Legal Setback Won’t Stop Smith From Adding Separation Question, Premier Says

Albertans will have to vote on whether or not Alberta will stay in Canada when heading to the polls this coming fall. Not only that, but Albertans will have to decide if a SECOND referendum on Alberta’s independence should happen in the future.

The October 19th referendum will have a question included that covers sentiments of both the Forever Canadian petition and the judge-stricken Stay Free Alberta petition. The judge’s decision was made on the basis of the fact that the Stay Free Alberta petition failed to consult First Nations on the topic.

Her decision to include the referendum to vote for another referendum would allow the provincial government to move forward with a second separation vote without it falling under the court ruling, meaning the outcome of the October 19th question will NOT trigger separation.

Despite the decision, the Stay Free Alberta camp was unhappy with Danielle Smith’s message to Albertans, claiming the lack of a “yes or no” question, and accuse Smith of “losing moral authority to lead the province of Alberta.”

The other nine questions, which asks for a mandate on issues relating to Alberta’s jurisdiction in matters of immigration and the judicial system, were announced earlier this year.

Danielle Smith is hosting a press conference where she will field questions about the address yesterday, at 12:30 mountain today.
