City of Lethbridge asks residents to conserve water

By Digital News Jun 2, 2026 | 12:30 PM

The City of Lethbridge is asking residents to be ‘smart’ about their water use over the next 48 hours.

An unusual amount of rainfall in the last day-and-a-half, it says, has washed a lot of mud and debris into the Oldman River, making the water much murkier than usual.

According to the city, this has created challenges for the Water Treatment Plant.

Despite the murkier river conditions, tap water remains safe to drink.

“Our tap water remains safe to drink,” says Jason Drenth, General Manager of Water & Wastewater and Electric Utility. “We ask the community and our regional customers to continue voluntary conservation efforts. This protects our equipment and maintains safe treatment standards.”

Officials ask that residents try and avoid outdoor water use, such as vehicle washing, watering lawns, keeping showers short or putting off any dishwashing or laundry, for now.

If you have any questions, call or text 311 within the City of Lethbridge.
