The Werklund Centre, Ghost River Theatre and Echoes of the Land is inviting people to experience a unique auditory journey, with a twist. Attendees will experience a journey guided by drummers, poets and singers.
Echoes of the Land originally premiered at the 2025 High Performance Rodeo, and brings together a creative team of Echoes of the Land by Ghost River Theatre, originally premiered at the 2025 High Performance Rodeo, and brings together a creative team of Alanna Bluebird, Cedric Lightning, Kenna Burima, Kris Demeanor, Skip Wolfleg, with sound design by Tauran Wood, the show is directed by Eric Rose with Jennie Esdale. We also received contributions from Clarence Wolfleg Senior and is part of a host of cultural activities meant to celebrate National Indigenous History Month.
“What people will experience is something they’ve probably never done before,” said Eric Rose, Artistic Director. “They’re going to lie down on the floor and be bathed in music, sound, and poetry. They’ll feel the vibration, because sound isn’t just about what you hear, it’s how you feel it. At the heart of the piece is a focus on Indigenous people, stories, and presence on this land.”
When attending the Echoes of the Land, participants will be asked to lay flat on the floor (with mats you bring from home), put on a blindfold (provided) and allow the sound bath to engage your senses in a meditative realm of discovery and reflection.
“Werklund Centre is proud to partner with Ghost River Theatre and this remarkable group of artists in celebrating Indigenous culture and storytelling. A collective commitment to reconciliation asks all of us not only to listen, but to remain open to Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding the world around us,” says Alex Sarian, President and CEO of Werklund Centre. “Echoes of the Land is an invitation into a deeply personal and profoundly human experience, and we are honoured to share it with Calgarians.”
We got the chance to speak with traditional drummer and Knowledge Keeper Skip Wolfleg about the event and his role.
We also chatted with Skip about the laying down and blindfolded portion of the show.
Skip told us about why this event is important.
