Parks Canada is looking to collar and track more grizzlies this season, and says collaring provides and support evidence based, adaptive management for the animals marked as “Threatened” here in Alberta.
The wildlife agency has already captured three grizzlies, one of which was bear No. 122, AKA The Boss, who promptly removed his collar within the week, which according to Parks Canada is normal for adult bears.
It’s all a part of Parks Canada’s grizzly bear habitat security model, which is a huge part of the 2022 Banff National Park management plan.
The increase in collaring grizzlies come after several human-bear encounters, including a time in Canmore where The Boss was spotted, and swaths of people descended for photos. Experts are reminding tourists about the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful distance with ALL wildlife in the coming season.
