Fortress Mountain Ski Resort had been closed since 2025, with plans for a re-opening with a 15 year timeline. The proposal had been open to the public until February of this year.
Indigenous consultation, wildlife surveys, and environmental management plans are among the conditions the province has set along with an approval for the long-awaited return of the Fortress Mountain Ski Resort, adding to Southern Alberta’s already impressive list of must-ski spots.
Conservancy groups had originally had concerns regarding the proposed space, including potential conflicts with grizzly bear movement, and the impact on the ecosystem.
The approval, from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport says Fortress would need to lower the number of daily visitors, changes to design aspects and remove any references to motorized recreation.
If all conditions are met, a new 99-year lease would be granted from the government, for the 1,471 hectares of Crown land. Among design changes, a proposed mountain-top restaurant is being re-located to the base of the mountain instead.
