An 11-year-old boy has died in a suspected drowning during a school field trip in southeastern Alberta.
Police say they received a call Monday afternoon about a child missing during a school outing at Echo Dale Regional Park in Medicine Hat.
Police, school officials and park staff searched the area and drones were used to look over the large lake in the park.
The city says all municipal pools and aquatic facilities are closed until further notice.
“Our heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family, friends and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Joe Hutter, interim city manager. “I can’t begin to imagine the grief this family is experiencing.”
The City of Medicine Hat announced that following the “tragic event” all aquatic facilities and pools in the city will remain closed until further notice.
