Sylvan Lake fishers may be catching some unwanted prizes, as officials confirm the presence of an invasive Prussian carp.

Carps are a member of the goldish family, and are originally from Europe and Asia, but their first confirmed finding in wild Alberta in the early 2000’s.

It’s unconfirmed how the fish had made it’s way into lakes and rivers in Alberta, but experts believe it may have stemmed from someone dumping their fish into ponds and rivers.

Their diet is highly adaptable and they reproduce quickly, meaning they can easily squeeze out native fish species.

Anglers are being urged to kill any Prussian carps they catch, and report sightings to the governments aquatic invasive species hotline.

The carp have previously been confirmed to live in the Bow, North Saskatchewan, Oldman, Red Deer, Rosebud and South Saskatchewan river watersheds.
