There is a full list of areas in Kananaskis that is currently under bear closures, the Elpoca Day Use Area and Valleyview Road, and Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit Trail both are closed.
There is currently a bear warning for the Lower Lake Campground, Boulton Creek Campground and Peter Lougheed Provincial park, due to an active family of four grizzly bears that have been frequenting the area, and even tore open an occupied tent.
As a result, bear spray was deployed on site. According to Alberta Parks, staff will be monitoring the bears and patrolling campsites to ensure safety going forward.
People are reminded that encounters with wildlife can happen at any time. To avoid surprise encounters with grizzlies, make plenty of noise and travel in groups, be aware of your surroundings, keep pets on a leash, and carry bear spray. Always store food in bear proof lockers or in hard sided vehicles.
