In mid-June, Alberta Fish and Wildlife said it was investigating a poached grizzly along Highway 734 near Sundre. The province had indicated that FWES had responded to the incident on June 14th, but amended to say the 13th instead.
In a follow-up today, the province said a second grizzly had been found in the same area later in the month. Both bears were estimated to be three or four years old, male and between 200 and 300 pounds.
The initial report came after somebody in the area had heard a gunshot, and saw “a black 2003-2006 Chevrolet Crew Cab Duramax diesel truck with tinted windows and a loud exhaust” travelling at a high speed down Highway 734.
Poaching continues to be one of the leading causes for grizzly mortality in Alberta, and the act of hunting them has been banned since 2006, with the exception of Indigenous hunters. Grizzlies have been a threatened species since 2010.
