The Calgary Flames have signed restricted free agent defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year contract worth $36.25 million.
Calgary acquired the 22-year-old Slovakian in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on June 23.
Nemec, the second overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, became the highest-drafted defenceman in history from Slovakia.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, Nemec recorded 11 goals and 15 assists while adding 26 penalty minutes in his most recent season with New Jersey.
Over 155 career games with the Devils, he tallied 16 goals and 33 assists.
The Flames acquired Nemec and right-winger Maxim Tsyplakov from New Jersey in exchange for conditional first-round draft picks in 2027 and 2028, a second-round selection this year, and prospect Etienne Morin.
The move bolsters Calgary’s blue line with a young, high-upside talent as the organization looks to build for the future.
