If you’re Jasper-bound, you may want to heed the warnings from Parks Canada, as berry season kicks into full swing, the number of bears in the area could increase.
Parks Canada says bears are actively feeding on the ripe berries, oftentimes in bushes along hiking trails, roadways and camping areas. Because the berries pull the bears full attention, they can become easier to spook.
To help mitigate the risk of running into a berry munching bear, experts advise hikers to make lots of noise when on the trail, hike in tight groups, and slow down when cycling through areas with lower visibility. And, to have bear spray on hand and know how to use it.
If you do run into a bear, walk backwards slowly to avoid triggering a chase response and stay calm.
