The City of Edmonton has made a mutual aid agreement with the City of Calgary, after Edmonton faced several severe weather events back-to-back.
The storms in Edmonton have caused damage to the urban tree canopy, leaving extensive clean up efforts in its wake. The demand is simply higher than the existing capacity of City forestry crews and local contractors.
Certified crews from Calgary will begin arriving today, and will work alongside Edmonton crews to clear debris, address hazards and assist in Dutch elm disease mitigation, for up to 7 days.
Edmonton crews have been dealing with more than 3,000 storm related issues, including downed limbs and branches from Dutch elm trees, which house beetles that spread Dutch elm disease, meaning prompt removal of the debris is very important.
“The City of Edmonton and its Parks and Roads Services team is extending their appreciation and deepest gratitude to the City of Calgary and its teams. This rapid mobilization is a powerful example of Alberta municipalities working together in times of need,” said the City of Edmonton in a statement Tuesday evening.
