Play On! has been hosting street hockey tournaments since 2003, with a total of 182 events being held to date in over 40 Canadian communities. In it’s pre-COVID season, they set a record for the largest street hockey tournament, with over 42,000 players.
From August 21st to the 22nd, downtown Calgary will transform for their upcoming tournament. Players can create their own teams of 4-7 players, with registration only costing $75 per person. Corporate teams require $1000 registration, and includes up to 10 players.
This tournament, teams can fundraise for charity, and the top 15 fundraising teams will be allowed to pick a player in the Celebrity Draft, with more than a few recognizable names, and includes Stanley Cup Champs, current PWHL players and Olympians.
We spoke with Scott Hill, Executive Chairmen for Play-On!, and asked about the celebrities attending and how the draft works.
We asked Scott about Play-On’s absence for a few years, the loss of Hockey Night in Canada, and why.
Scott told us about how Play-On! was able to fund the event despite losing funding.
We asked about this programs Indigenous representation, and what the program has meant to Indigenous youth in Alberta.
Registration for teams is still open, and remains open until Monday August 17th at midnight. Currently, at the time of the article posting, the highest fundraising team is the Happy Gilmores, with $50. There are also currently 33 teams fundraising.
