Film lovers, get excited for the 27th edition of the Calgary International Film Festival returning on September 24 – October 4, 2026.
Calgary International Film Festival is the largest film festival in Alberta and the largest in Canada. CIFF is an Academy Awards Oscar-qualifying festival and a Canadian Screen Award Qualifying festival.
Artistic Director, Brian Owens from CIFF dropped by the studio to highlight TOP 3 Indigenous Films:
- Banchi Hanuse, Ceremony: The film profiles the Nuxalk people of British Columbia, as they use various cultural strategies, including both traditional ceremonies and modern tools such as broadcasting and activism, to cope with and resolve the environmental decline of the culturally significant ooligan fish.
- Marie Clements, How we Stand: The film tells the story of three Native American sisters from Oklahoma who travelled with their mother to Los Angeles in the late 1960 as part of the relocation program “civilizing” Native Americans, but whose lives took very different paths after their mother was killed not long after their arrival.
- Cody Lightning, Smudge the Blades: A fresh take on the underdog sports film, centering on an Indigenous hockey team in Northern Alberta, from actor and director Cody Lightning (Hey, Viktor!, TIFF ’23) and starring Ed Helms, Jana Schmieding, and Paulina Alexis.
Over 200 Films short and feature-length multi-genre films will be showcased during the festival.
