Vanessa and Rodrick Hunter are the organizers of the 6th Annual Every Child Matters Powwow, taking place on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, at the Bob Bahan Pool.
Every year, the event draws hundreds of Calgarians, and this year is shaping up to be no different. The event is open to everyone, and according to Rodrick and Vanessa, there is no shortage of diverse attendees.
At the Powwow, attendees can expect an opportunity to learn about, and from, residential school survivors, meet neighbors, share food and take in cultural demonstrations. Dancing, drumming and cultural demonstrations, as well as a chance to meet an Elder, are all on the agenda for this event.
Light snacks and water will be provided, and small gifts for volunteers will be given. As it stands now, Vanessa and Rodrick are still looking for interested community vendors, and are also seeking donations. Deli meats, bottled water, snacks and gift cards are all encouraged, as the level of funding Rodrick and Vanessa work with is small.
Dancers are also encouraged to attend, and registration starts between 10am and 11am, and dancers must be in full regalia. Grand entry is set for noon. Vanessa and Rodrick are also looking for anyone able to donate a tipi for the day as well.
