The Bearspaw First Nation is set to receive nearly $21.9 million in both federal and provincial funding, in order to expand access to high speed internet for more than 1,000 households in rural southern Alberta.
That investment is part of nearly $25 million, announced September 15th for two broadband projects that look to connect more than 1,800 households across the province.
The Bearspaw Networks project will run using a combination of fixed wireless technology and fibre to communities that include Kehewin Cree Nation, Foremost, Rocky Rapids and Buck Lake. The project is expected to finish in March of 2028.
Bearspaw Networks is 100% owned and operated in Alberta by the Bearspaw First Nation. They first expanded their telecommunications beyond it’s own communities in 2022, after acquiring the Edmonton based Clearwave Broadband Networks.
The company says it’s mission is to connect unconnected, and under-connected communities across Canada, with fast and reliable internet. The Bearspaw Networks say they are now bringing together it’s telecommunications brands under the Bearspaw Network name as it expands it’s service across Alberta.
