The City of Lethbridge has more than a few events leading up to September 30th, but it’s the Buffalo Spirit Games that kick off Truth and Reconciliation for Lethbridge.
The event is to take place at the Nicholas Sheran Centre, and kicks off with a Blackfoot half-marathon at 7am, and will have events through until 5pm, when the closing ceremonies take place.
The idea of the Buffalo Spirit Games plays off the communal bison hunts, where each type of role carried a responsibility. Elders will be attending the event as well, and will be creating spaces of sharing and conversations. All of the events are inviting people of all ages to experience Blackfoot culture as active participants.
Alongside an artisan market and cultural activities, a lacrosse tournament, several lengths of runs, and a 2k archery run are all on the schedule for the day.
We got to speak with Abby Neudorf, an event coordinator with Lethbridge Sports Council, and asked about how the Buffalo Spirit Games event came to be.
