The Niitoiyis Family Support Society is set to host the Stories and Teachings with Elders event in Calgary on September 25th . The gathering will give community members an opportunity to hear Elders share stories, experiences and teachings in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Niitoiyis Family Wellness Centre and includes a traditional feast, tea and coffee.
Florinda Kootnay, a Social Worker with Niitoiyis Family Support Society, tells CJWE attendees can expect a warm and welcoming environment, with medicines available and Elders sharing stories and teachings over tea.
Kootnay reflects on what Orange Shirt Day means to her, sharing her experiences with Residential School and recognizing survivors as warriors. She adds that seeing people wear orange is a sign of growing awareness of what many children endured within Residential Schools.
Kootnay speaks on the event that sharing stories amongst one another is medicine within the community.
