Alberta continues to lead the country in population growth.
New preliminary estimates from Statistics Canada show Alberta’s population grew by 1.5 per cent between July 2025 and July 2026, which is the fastest rate among the provinces.
Growth has slowed across the country, though. Canada’s population increased by just 0.5 per cent, the lowest annual growth rate in more than a century.
Statistics Canada says the slowdown is largely linked to changes in international migration. Canada’s non-permanent resident population dropped by more than 154,000 over the past year, while the number of new permanent immigrants also declined.
Despite the slowdown, Alberta continues to outpace the rest of the provinces when it comes to population growth.
According to the latest Statistics Canada estimate, Alberta’s population has topped 5.1 million, with the province adding more than 76,000 people over the past year.
As of July 1, 2026, Canada’s estimated population population sits at nearly 41.8 million.
