During the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event at The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland, it was announced that the Indigenous Gathering Place, the City of Calgary, and The Confluence are reallocating a portion of the lands currently operated by The Confluence, for a future Indigenous Gathering Place.
The Indigenous Gathering Place Society have been advocating and working towards a gathering place at Moh’Kinsstis, where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet for many years, with the work shaped by Elders, many of whom were survivors.
“Moh’kinsstis has been a place of gathering, relationship and connection for Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial. Establishing the Indigenous Gathering Place here will create a visible and permanent place for Indigenous Peoples to gather, practice culture, share knowledge, hold ceremony and strengthen community for generations to come.” said the Indigenous Gathering Place Society in a news release.
The next phase of this work will be the City of Calgary, The Confluence, and the Indigenous Gathering Place Society working together to determine the exact location and size of the land required for the Gathering Place, and marks an important step forward in a process that Elders and Indigenous community members have been guiding for many years.
