It’s the beginning of Fire Prevention Week in Lethbridge, and the Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services, or the LFES are tackling one of the growing fire concerns, not only in Lethbridge, but across the country; lithium ion battery fires.

Through this week, officials are reminding residents on safely storing and disposing of lithium ion batteries. When these batteries make their way into the garbage and recycling trucks through your blue and black bin, the compacting causes damage and fire risks to the battery in question.

This years Fire Safety Campaign focuses on three tips for residents:

Only buy certified products:

Look for items that have been tested and certified with Canadian safety standards. Look for a CSA, ULC or ETL markings.

Charge devices properly:

Only use the charging cord, and power supply, that came with your device. Charge items on a hard surface, and never beds, couches or under pillows.

Recycle responsibly:

Never place lithium-ion batteries in your blue or black bins. Damaged batteries can ignite when crushed or compacted during collection and processing. To help with properly disposing of batteries, the city will be offering its curbside battery collection program from Nov. 17 through 27.
