Alberta Reversing Disability Assistance Cut for Couples

Alberta is reversing a rule that reduced monthly living allowances for couples when both partners qualified for provincial disability assistance.

The change applies to people receiving support through AISH or the Alberta Disability Assistance Program or ADAP.

The rule, which took effect this summer, set each partner’s living allowance at 88 per cent of the regular amount.

The province says affected clients will receive retroactive payments covering the difference back to August 2026.

No action is required, and payments are expected to be issued before the end of the year.

Someone who would normally receive the $1,940 monthly rate saw that amount reduced by about $233 per month under the rule.

Alberta has also shortened the process for people who moved from AISH to ADAP and later want to return to AISH. Much of the information already on file can now be reused, reducing the non-medical portion of the application process by 75 per cent.

The province says nurse practitioners can also now complete the required medical reports, in addition to physicians.

ADAP launched in July and is designed to support Albertans with disabilities who are able to work with fewer restrictions than those receiving AISH. Alberta says hundreds of AISH clients have requested transfers to ADAP to access its employment supports and higher income exemptions.
