It was announced on social media this morning that the Blood Tribe Chief and Council have passed a resolution that directs Blood Tribe Management to apply for an import permit from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to begin a transfer 25 bison from Montana to the nation.
The department is responsible for preparing the infrastructure logistics, and will set up a six-month quarantine area for the purpose of receiving the bison, which are coming from the Fort Peck Tribes of Montana, in part with the Buffalo Relations Institute Representatives.
The bison are set to arrive in January of 2027, and additionally the bison will turn from livestock to wildlife, which is significant, as it acknowledges the species return to their original habitats, unlike livestock.
Chief Traveller Plaited Hair said in a statement on Facebook, “The Blood Tribe is very pleased with the developments of the collaborations with Waterton Parks and the Buffalo Treaty with the Land Management department for the expansion of our Iinnii (Bison).”
