In a news conference today, Chief Operating Officer of water utility Michael Thompson and Mayor Jeromy Farkas gave Calgarians an update on the ongoing construction of the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main. It was announced the city would observe Stage 4 water restrictions, meaning Calgarians will once again have to forego outdoor water use, and limit indoor water use.
As the new feeder main prepares to be connected to the water system, it will have to be shut down, as crews install and begin commissioning the new pipe, and ensuring it can be brought into service by the end of this year.
That includes things like only doing full loads in the dishwasher, only doing laundry when necessary, and being mindful about washroom water use, for four weeks starting November 4th. According to Michael Thompson, the goal will be to save 500 million liters of water per day. He also noted that Calgary and it’s surrounding towns will be solely relying on the Glenmore water plant during the shutdown.
The repair continues to be on track for end-of-year completion.
