The province has released it’s stats for the 2026 camping season, with some staggering numbers. Alberta is home to over 300 provincial parks, and according to the provincial release, more than 570,000 camper nights were reserved across the province.

Most of these were developed in the 70’s and 80’s, and was originally set when Alberta was only home to a million or so people, compared to 5 million or more now.

Alberta Parks ran more than 3,000 programs over the summer, and the report indicated front-line staff had more than 650,000 visitor interactions. These events include formal education, special events, recreation and public safety programming.

Alberta Parks also took the opportunity to update Albertans on ongoing trail improvements, and has completed updates in Ha Ling Peak, Prairie Mountain and Mount Yamnuska. “Trails and campgrounds go hand in hand. Many Albertans head out on a trail and spend the night at a campsite, so investing in camping infrastructure supports the whole outdoor experience. Alberta TrailNet Society is pleased to see this continued commitment to the places our members enjoy.” said Crystal Damer, Chair of the Board with TrailNet Society.

So far in 2026, the Alberta has completed nearly 70 capital projects. Looking ahead, the province says it has plans to develop more than 900 more campsites by 2031, which is two years ahead of schedule. Construction is currently underway on 80 sites, and includes Pigeon Lake Park, Freeman Lake, Waterton Reservoir, and Coffin Bridge are on track to become a camping site.

As campers and trail users enter the fall season, Alberta Parks is asking travelers to use extra caution, and be aware of rapidly changing conditions in the mountains. Never hesitate to alter your plans if conditions become unfavorable.
