Today marks the start of the Wilder Institutes Calgary Zoo #ChonkyBearWeek. But, why highlight bears gaining weight? Well, the science behind it says bears are currently entering a state of hyperphagia, in which their appetites increase as they begin trying to beef up for the winter season.
Starting today, the Calgary Zoo is showcasing their bears, and who is putting on good weight. Residents can keep up with #ChonkyBearWeek on the Calgary Zoo Facebook, and residents will be asked to vote on who had the best winter season bulk.
Last years queen, Manuka, who has since made her home in Quebec, was the winner and is pictured above.
Today’s first bear showcase is the female black bear Teslin, who is slowly becoming “a perfect sphere” according to the Calgary Zoo Facebook. Check back in with the Calgary Zoo tomorrow, to see the next #ChonkyBearWeek contestant.
