Today is decision day in Alberta, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Voters across the province are weighing in on a ten-question referendum that ranges from local governance to the future of Canada itself.
What’s on the ballot?
-
Questions 1–5: Focus on immigration policy, specifically around access to healthcare, education, and citizenship in Alberta.
-
Questions 6–9: Deal with expanding the province’s constitutional clout and judicial sovereignty relative to Ottawa.
-
Question 10: The big one—asking whether Alberta should stay in Canada or commit to a follow-up, legally binding vote on independence.
Polling stations are open until 8 p.m. local time, though over a million Albertans have already submitted their choices through mail-in and advance voting.
When do we get results? Early ballot counting starts at 5 p.m., and live returns will begin trickling in after polls close. However, expect a late night if you’re watching the independence issue: Elections Alberta estimates the results for Question 10 won’t be ready until somewhere between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
More than 1.2 million Albertans have already cast ballots.
