As of noon, on October 22nd, public traffic will be working it’s way through the final completed segment of the Tsuut’ina Parkway, marking the completion of a road network that began more than 13 years ago.
The Southwest Calgary Ring Road was signed into agreement in 2013, between Tsuut’ina Nation and the Government of Alberta. The idea was to create a road network that would better serve the region, while opening up the Nation’s land for long-term economic development.
Taza’s three villages are now connected with Tsuut’ina Trail, while Tsuut’ina Parkway completes the road network into the cities southwest, into the Westhills community.
The mornings ceremony started with a land blessing from Elder Charlie Crowchild, and Traditional Helper David Meguinis. Just before that, Tsuut’ina Nation dancers and drummers performed. The ribbon cutting was preceded by comments from Tsuut’ina leadership and Taza, guests gathered for the ribbon cutting.
“Taza Park and Calgary now share a direct connection, and it opens opportunities in both directions,” said James Robertson, President of Taza Development Corp. “That is the vision behind Taza: a community that strengthens the Nation, serves its residents and contributes to the region for the long term. The completion of Tsuut’ina Parkway moves that vision forward.
After the cutting, the ceremony was closed with a Round Dance in the new roundabout. For families moving into Taza Park early in 2026, Tsuut’ina Parkway will give them direct access to the future Walmart, which is set to be the first major grocery tenant in the area.
“Today’s opening of Tsuut’ina Parkway is another step in fulfilling our ancestors’ commitments,” says Xàkíjí (Head Chief) Ellery Starlight. “When Chief Bullhead entered into Treaty 7, there was a vision of making peace, friendship and opening up for commerce. The vision was that we would be surrounded by boxes, and in those boxes will be people living and growing together in harmony and prosperity. Through all of Taza and other projects, we continue to put into action our collective promise.”
