Ground has officially been broken on a new 15,000 square foot gathering place, which is to be located next to the Chiniki Community College in Mînî Thnî. The plans include an indoor gymnasium, which will be used to host community gatherings.

Elders led prayers, and traditional songs were shared. Chief Aaron Young thanked the drummers and Elders for their participation, and said the new gathering place will be a spot for Elders to share their knowledge with todays youth, and help them maintain their identity.

Alongside Chief Aaron Young, Bearspaw Chief Darcy Dixon was in attendance, as well as councillors and Consul. Chen Jiebin, consulate general of the People’s Republic of China in Calgary, who made her first visit to the Stoney Nakoda Nation.

$1.5 million of the project is supported by a provincial grant through the Active Communities Initiative, and was one of 20 projects to be awarded funding.
