So far in 2026, there have been nine fatal pedestrian-involved collisions in Calgary. This week alone, a pedestrian was struck and injured at 4th Street and 32nd avenue around 7:30am on Tuesday morning.

Just one day earlier, a pedestrian-involved collision took place at 135 Martindale Boulevard, where a vehicle attempting to enter a gated parking lot reportedly drove over a man lying on the sidewalk.

The man was taken to hospital, and later succumbed to his injuries.

In 2025, Calgary set a 10-year high for traffic fatalities. A report showed 38 fatal collisions in 2025, including 15 pedestrians and two cyclists, which was up from 2024.

This year, the total number of pedestrian deaths is 9, and reports show pedestrians had the right of way in 5 of those instances.

As the darker months roll in, drivers are reminded to always pay attention, anticipate pedestrians and avoid speeding. Pedestrians and parents are encouraged to wear reflective clothing and to try and avoid dark winter clothing. Parents could even send their children to school with flashlights, according to the Calgary Police Traffic Unit.
