Hundreds of young hockey players from various Indigenous communities across Alberta have gathered in the city of Calgary and Tsuut’ina Nation for the 2024 Alberta Treaty Hockey Championships.
The opening ceremony took place at the Seven Chiefs Sportplex & Jim Starlight Centre which included a grand entry featuring the teams who had gathered for the ceremony as well, a ceremonial puck drop.
There was a moment of silent for the late Seth Saulteaux and Kastin Alexis both members of Alberta Treaty Hockey.
Chief Desmon Bull of the Lewis Bull Tribe in Muskwachees spoke at the opening ceremony and encourages the youth to work together.
Players who took part in the Native Hockey Alberta Provincial Tournament in Edmonton the previous week join the Treaty Tournament dressed in home community colours.
Because Treaty Hockey has a strong focus on community, it is chance for the community to empower the next generation.
Minor Chief of the Tsuut’ina Nation Leon Littlelight shares what the championship mean to the community of Tsuut’ina.
Games are held across the city of Calgary including the Max Bell Centre, Jimmy Condon & Rose Kohn Arenas, Stew Hendry & Henry Vinney Arenas, and Tsuut’ina Seven Chiefs Sportplex from April 12 to 14.
All final gold metal games will be played all day Sunday April 14 at the Max Bell Centre.
