August 29 will be a history making moment for the people of the Stoney Nakoda Nations.
That is when community leaders officially rename “Morley” to “Mini Thni”
The name “Morley” was given to the community by Methodist missionary John McDougall as he named the area after his friend Morley Punshon from the area’s name of Ghost River back in 1873.
On Thursday, the name change celebration will include ceremony, drumming and dancing.
Key addresses will also be made by Chief Clifford Poucette, Goodstoney First Nation, Chief Aaron Young, Chiniki First Nation, and Chief Darcy Dixon, Bearspaw First Nation.
Changing the name in the Nakoda language marks a celebration of heritage, sovereignty, and cultural revitalization.
The public are welcome to attend as grand entry for the historic event is scheduled to start at noon with a grand entry of local delegates on the grounds of the Stoney Nakoda administration office.
