The coldest month of the year is around the corner, but it also marks the start of various shows and events throughout the city of Calgary with its annual winter festival.
Chinook Blast is one of the biggest winter activities in Calgary as last year approximately 433,000 people attended the annual festival.
This year marks the fifth year of Chinook Blast, and it is looking to be bigger than ever, with events like Skijor Canada’s annual Skijourdue and Calgary Folk Festival’s Block Heater shows, there is a little something for everyone during the winter festival.
The milestones continue throughout Chinook Blast as 2025 marks the Calgary Surge’s third season in Calgary and this year they will be encouraging people to try playing basketball in the cold.
Director of the Surge Jason Ribeiro shares how the Surge is active every day of the year and why it’s important to promote a sport that normally isn’t played outside in the winter.
One of the main goals of Chinook Blast is to create Calgary as a year-round festival hub and as Alisha Reynolds, President and CEO of Tourism Calgary says, as much as the winter festival brings in outside visitors the heart of it is the city’s community.
The winter festival will be hosting various events through the city’s downtown core and be highlighting the many talents of residents of Calgary have to offer.
Chinook Blast officially kicks off from January 31 to February 17.
