Nearly 5,000 Elders from communities across Canada are set to meet in Edmonton this fall, to discuss issues of concern and share ideas.
The first gathering, held in 2017, was organized as community leaders noticed that elders were being consulted less and less, and involved in important matters whether on the community level, or even regional and national issues.
In October, Elders forum topics at the Edmonton Expo Centre will include culture and language revitalization, reconciliation, missing and murdered Indigenous women and climate change.
The gathering is spearheaded by a National Gathering of Elders Advisory Council, along with a core group of organizers from Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8 First Nations, the Métis Nation of Alberta, Métis Settlements General Council, Inuit Edmonton and the Assembly of First Nations.
The gathering is an opportunity for elders to share information with each other and take those teachings back to their respective communities.
