A new program is helping to fund Blackfoot signs across the Kainai Nation with a goal to teach locals and visitors about the region’s history and keep the language alive.
The Blackfoot Language Signage Project is a partnership between the Kainai/Blood Tribe and local southern Alberta Economic Development and Tourism organizations which will fund the construction of signs that feature the Blackfoot language across the region.
The Blackfoot signage aims to enrich the landscape to its Blackfoot Confederacy Territory origins for locals and visitors to learn more about the deep history of our region.
Arnold Fox, Director of Blood Tribe Social Development, along with the Aitsi’poyiiksi Committee will take the lead in providing the translations for signage locations across Blackfoot Territory which will help promote and preserve our Blackfoot Language.
“Preserving the Blackfoot Language is a hard battle, but to see it on signs and part of our everyday life is a positive step and will be a constant reminder that the history of our people is the deep story of this land, and we hope that invites more and more people to learn about our past,” says Fox.
According to a news release, the partners in the project hope to expand the funding to cover all traditional Blackfoot territory next year.
Applications for the funding can be found online.
