A week after the Province posted a link for parents who were impacted by the closure of their child care provider due to the E. coli outbreak declared by Alberta Health Services on September 4, 2023, the central kitchen linked to the outbreak, Fueling Minds, has been charged with serving food at childcare centres in Calgary without a food services business licence.
Investigators have previously said the source of the outbreak almost certainly came from a central kitchen used by the 11 daycares at the root of the outbreak, which put dozens of children in hospital and caused hundreds more to fall ill.
The city says the charges were issued after it was discovered that Fueling Minds had been providing third-party food services to five Calgary childcare centres that were not owned by the company.
Fueling Minds and its two directors have each been charged under the Business Licensing Bylaw for operating without a business licence for a total of 12 charges.
If convicted, they could face fines up to $120,000.
