With the cities of Calgary and Edmonton working on improving public safety in the city’s down town core. The Union which represents transit workers Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and it’s national parent CUTA calling upon governments of all levels to address violence on public transit.
The union put out a press release and a document called “Prioritizing Safety on Public Transit” with a list of recommendations to help keep transit workers safe.
CUTA listed the following in a press release on April 24th as a priority they want to see changed and addressed:
- Customer Safety
- Staff Safety
- Housing and Supports
- Substance Use
- Mental Health

Along with the recommendations, CUTA is also calling for amendments to the Criminal Code of Canada to include specific offences against transit workers.
The information gather for the recommendations where gathers from last summer and over the winter from different cities across Canada.
