From April 4 – 7 Indigenous youth from around the province gathered in various arenas Edmonton for the Native Hockey Alberta Provincials Championships.
For many of the youths in various divisions, it was their first time playing at a competitive level which includes youth from Tsuut’ina’s U9-11 Seven Chiefs Black Team.
Their Head Coach Skylar Crowchild shared with CJWE how the team has been enjoying their time on and off the ice.
Among the many nations from Treaty 7 that attended the Championships, the Kainai (Blood Tribe) send the most teams in both male and female categories.
This is because of the many opportunities to play hockey in the Nation however, not everyone is able to take part in the game due the price of equipment.
To address this, the Kainai Nation and the Jr. Toe Dragons will be providing full sets of gear for 40 kids.
Head Coach of the Jr. Toe Dragons Lance Bert shares more about the program.
Many of the youth who participated in the Provincials Championships, will be in Calgary April 11 – 14 for the Alberta Treaty Hockey Championships.
Details can be found on the CJWE events calendar with the opening ceremony at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex and Jim Starlight Centre at 7 p.m.
