The sound of jingle dresses and the drum rang through the gymnasium as Stoney Health Services brought community members together to bring awareness to MMIWG2S with an event and walk in Mini Thni Monday, May the 6th. The community gathered with speakers, dancers and a walk, in honor of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit. They’re hope was to call on everyone to join them and help uplift this cause against injustice by being part of the awareness walk, ribbon hanging, healing dance, and feast.
Councilor Crystal shared a message to all the young warriors in attendance.
2024 Calgary Stampede Indigenous Princess Margaret Halloway spoke about the importance of holding events like this.
Communities across Turtle Island will continue to honour and bring awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women and girls, and two-spirit people who have gone missing or who have been murdered. In 2020, the murder rate for that year was more than five times higher for Indigenous women compared with non-Indigenous women, according to a report by Statistics Canada.
